Edinburgh’s festive season gets under way this year on the 24th of November with a Light Night on George Street.
After a festive light show on the facade of buildings along George Street a troupe of street performers and artists will lead a procession towards The Mound.
Onlookers will be greeted by a 14 metre high Snow Queen and performers on the ground and above. There will then be a fireworks display followed by the switching on of the lights by the good people of Hordaland.
After this there will be a concert in St Andrew Square.
The Christmas Festivities will also include:
- St Andrew’s Weekend 26th – 27h November: Display of ice sculptures & a fire-themed show in the Castle Esplanade on the Royal Mile
- Saturday 3rd December: Arrival of Santa on his sleigh along Princes Street to the East Princes Street Gardens
- Sunday 11th December: Get to West Princes Street Gardens to witness the surreal sight of hundreds of Sumba dancing Santas warming up before they set of on The Great Edinburgh Santa Run
The ever popular nativity scene will be located in St Andrew Square.
The German Market & the Highland Market will be in there usual place on The Mound and in East Princes Street Gardens.
The ice rink, which was under some doubt due to financial concerns has been saved thanks to a financial package kindly put forward by Essential Edinburgh and a mystery hotelier.
Andy Neal, chief executive of Essential Edinburgh said ”Essential Edinburgh felt it was important to make a significant investment to support the Christmas activities – and we are delighted to play a big part.”
He went on to say “We wanted to step in to remove the unhelpful uncertainty which surrounded the continued presence of Edinburgh’s Ice Rink. With all that is going on in the city centre, it was essential that we did not lose such a popular attraction at a vital time of the year.”
The full programme of events & ticket prices is available on Edinburgh’s Christmas website.
